Conference location
The conference is being held at Laval University in Quebec City, a proud member of UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Quebec City, founded in 1608 on the site of an Amerindian village (Stadacona), is the oldest city in French America. Even today, the city is the « capitale nationale » of Quebecers, and is the site of the Quebec provincial government. It is the location of « l’Assemblée nationale », the parliament of the Quebec nation.
The name Quebec likely originates from the Iroquois language and would mean "where the river narrows”. The city overlooks the majestic St. Lawrence River, and is located at the eastern end of its estuary, up to 100 km wide, which flows into the Gulf of the same name. With its mountains to the north and the river at its feet, Quebec City is famous for its magnificent landscapes.
The city includes a fortified centre with its imposing citadel, European reminiscences (Old Quebec and Place Royale) and the most photographed hotel in the world, Château Frontenac. A northern city, Quebec comes alive joyfully in January and February with its famous Winter Carnival, while happily celebrating during the summer season with its popular International Summer Festival!
Getting to Quebec city
Very popular with tourists from all over the world, Quebec City is a very accessible city, served by Jean Lesage International Airport, located 20 minutes from downtown.
From Jean Lesage Airport to Downtown and the University
Taxis, Uber and public transit can take you from the airport to downtown Quebec City and Université Laval in about 20 minutes.
We recommend taking a taxi or Uber to get from the airport to the university or your hotel and from the university to the airport or from your hotel to the airport. It costs about $30 to travel from the airport to Laval University by taxi.
Université Laval Campus
A former seminary (1663-1878), Université Laval is located on a magnificent campus close to downtown and integrated into its community. The campus is alive with an effervescent cultural, sporting and social life. It is surrounded by hotels, which can be easily reached on foot, by taxi or by bus.
The Université Laval campus is composed of some thirty buildings over a total area of 1.8 km2 . It offers an exceptional and safe environment for study and living. Composed of numerous green spaces, wooded areas and criss-crossed by hiking and cycling trails, our North American-style campus encourages walking between the buildings. The conference will take place mainly in the magnificent Gene H. Kruger Pavilion. Named in honour of the son of the founder of the Kruger forestry company's, Gene H. Kruger (1902-1988), the Pavilion is a green building, an ecological construction built entirely of wood and non-polluting materials, using as much solar energy as possible for its heating and natural ventilation.
There are 4 residential buildings, one of which is reserved for women, you will find a real living environment, imbued with a community spirit and close to all services. Fast food counters, restaurants and cafés offer a variety of dishes at reasonable prices in almost all buildings. Offerings include a restaurant-bar, the university pub, a food stop, Saveurs Campus, as well as a bistro inspired by the Boreal flavours, the Cercle universitaire. We encourage you to taste products designed on campus by the students.
Language, Exchange rate and Cost of living
Although French is the official language of Quebec, the conference will be held in English. There will be no simultaneous translation.
