2026 CPS-ADQ Joint Annual Meeting

Canadian Population Society and l’Association des Démographes du Québec

May 25-28, 2026, Jean Talon Conference Room, Statistics Canada, Ottawa, ON

Deadline for submission: February 13, 2026

The Canadian Population Society (CPS) and l’Association des démographes du Québec (ADQ) invite submissions for the 2026 special joint conference to be held at Statistics Canada headquarters in Ottawa from May 25-28. This year’s conference is a special event, the first fully joint CPS-ADQ conference in over 10 years, and hosted for the first time at Statistics Canada. The conference program welcomes submissions on a broad range of subjects, and aims to promote a vibrant exchange among researchers, students, and public servants about topics in demography, population dynamics, and socio-economic trends. Selected papers will be considered for inclusion in special journal editions of Canadian Studies in Population (CSiP) and Cahiers québécois de démographie (CQD).

Instructions for submitting an abstract

Applicants requiring approval from their organization to attend the conference should submit their abstract by the deadline, then notify CPS-ADQ when they receive approval from their organization to attend.

  2. Length: Abstracts should be 200-500 words and sufficiently detailed to allow the program chair to evaluate their merits for inclusion in the conference program.

  3. Required information: The author submitting the abstract must provide the following information in the abstract submission form:

    1. Full name, affiliation, and email address of the author, presenter, and co-authors.

Submissions for which no author has registered by this deadline will be dropped from the final program. Completed papers and/or presentations must be submitted to the conference portal by May 15, 2026.

  6. Membership requirement: At least one author of each accepted paper must hold a valid membership in CPS or ADQ and register for the conference. Membership and registration fees are harmonized to ensure members of either association pay the same total cost to participate.

Presentations will be in-person, and hybrid access will be available for remote audience members. Participants are encouraged to attend in-person to take advantage of networking and social events such as the poster session and the banquet (Day 2, May 26). Sessions are bilingual to foster exchange across the English and French demographic communities, and presentations may be given in either official language.

Student participation: The CPS and ADQ enthusiastically encourage student participation. Students submitting an abstract should indicate their degree program, field, and institution to confirm their eligibility for the Student Paper Competition and Travel Awards.

Poster session and best poster award: Applicants whose abstracts cannot be accommodated in a regular session may be invited to present a research poster. The poster session will follow Day 2 of regular conference sessions on the afternoon of May 26, 2026, in conjunction with the reception. The CPS and ADQ will each award a prize for the best poster presentation. The deadline for students to submit posters to the award committee is May 1, 2026.

Student Travel Awards: The CPS-ADQ has applied for financial support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to supplement the cost of travel and accommodations for student conference participants.
