Dr. Julia Totosy de Zepetnek- University of Regina Physical Activity and the Microbiota-Gut-Brain-Axis in Health and Disease This talk will provide insight into how physical activity can modulate the microbiota-gut-brain-axis and homeostatic food intake regulation. What does this mean? Homeostatic food intake (FI) regulation refers to feeding driven by energy deficit through short- (e.g., ghrelin, GLP-1, PYY) and long-term (e.g., leptin, insulin) appetite signals (gut-brain-axis). Colonic microbiota and their metabolic activity have emerged as a major player in FI regulation; e.g., production of short-chain-fatty acids (SCFA) can regulate appetite signals (microbiota-gut-brain-axis). It is suggested that physical activity can help regulate FI; potential mechanisms include increasing the sensitivity of the brain to appetite signals, and increasing diversity and modifying abundance of certain SCFA-producing bacteria.
