Student Mentorship Breakfast

Pre-registration is required. This event is now sold out. Hosted and organized by the CSEP Student Committee, the Mentorship Breakfast offers CSEP student members the chance to meet with academic and professional members in a small group setting. The event will start with a keynote address from the 2022 CSEP Mentorship Award recipient Dr. Kevin Shoemaker, followed by 2-3 rotations where students will interact with mentors. After these rotations, students and mentors will be encouraged to interact freely and network. Health and Fitness Professionals Lecture in Honour of Gord Sleivert

Dr. Patrick Neary - The Perils of Concussion: Keep them in the Dark or Exercise? Concussions are complex and perplexing to the medical community, and how to properly management them has been an area of unknown. Previously, because of the lack of information on how to manage concussion, it was recommended that those experiencing symptoms should rest, preferably in a dark quite room, without sensory distractions, and visual distractions in particular. More recently in the past couple of years this concept has been challenged, and now many experts in the field advocated using exercise as a therapeutic management technique. This presentation will provide a background to concussion management by looking at exercise as an option.

Determinants, Implications and Applications of the Critical Intensity

This symposium will focus on the critical intensity of exercise, the threshold separating the heavy and severe exercise intensity domains. As the highest intensity of exercise that can be sustained with a steady metabolic rate, this threshold is imperative to exercise prescription and training. The symposium will begin with a talk emphasizing the origins of the critical intensity concept and the progress made in identifying, conceptualizing, applying, and understanding this parameter in the context of various modes of exercise. Subsequently, recent studies investigating the role of skeletal muscle mitochondrial content in influencing critical torque/power, as well as the potential utility of critical load for resistance exercise training, will be discussed. Audience members will learn how to measure and apply the critical intensity to exercise training while gaining a deeper understanding of its physiological basis. Exercise Training and Cardiac Adaptation

15:30 ~ 17:00 MDT Conference attendees will gain an understanding of exercise-induced cardiac responses, an understanding of how to differentiate between physiological and pathological adaptations, and what cardiac examinations are best suited to detect these. Potential mechanisms for these adaptations will also be discussed. The symposium will end with a review of relevant case examples of physiological and pathological cardiac adaptations and how exercise professionals can individualize exercise programs in those with pathological adaptations. The use of Physical Activity Programs and Counseling in Clinics and Communities throughout Nova Scotia

Physical activity is not widely implemented in healthcare settings. Nova Scotia is working on several initiatives with the use of Clinical Exercise physiologists (CEPs) to make physical activity more accessible across the province. This session will outline best practices for clinical exercise prescription in community settings Objectives of this session: 1. Identify the benefits of clinical exercise approaches in community settings for primary, and secondary prevention of chronic disease 2. Outline three different models of community exercise approaches currently employed in Nova Scotia; for those living with and beyond cancer; at YMCAs using inclusive programming, and with Nova Scotia health and integrations with health care and community recreation programs 3. Highlight challenges and success strategies for implementation of programs that bridge the gap from health care to community exercise. Value: This session will assist those wanting to implement clinical exercise prescription in real world settings using collaborative approaches. The overall value of more widespread programming in community settings using qualified exercise professionals is that it will place less stress on healthcare system and reduce overall burden of physical inactivity. All initiatives work together to bridge the gap between clinic and community.
