Please help us spread the word by ciruclating the CSM2023 Halifax Conference to your colleagues who might be interested in the conference. Thank you for your support.

ATTENTION: CSM has launched a new website on Friday, April 14, 2023. Due to this website changeover, it will take a few days for all the society's features related to membership registration and email confirmations to function. Due to this temporary delay in website turnover, the Early Registration deadline has been extended to Monday, April 24, 2023, 11:45 PM Atlantic time and General Abstract Submissions have been extended to Monday, May 1, 2023, 11:45 PM Atlantic time.

Welcome to Dalhousie

We are very pleased to invite you to the 72nd Annual Conference of the Canadian Society of Microbiologists (CSM 2023) that will be held in person at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a selected virtual program also being offered online between June 25-28, 2023. Dalhousie University in Halifax is located on Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. We are fortunate to convene our conference experience on this beautiful territory.

The Local Organizing Committee of CSM 2023 is excited to host a successful event that will showcase the breadth, diversity, and excellence of the Canadian microbiology community. This year's CSM 2023 conference theme is Microbial Ecosystems - Environment and Health, but we welcome microbiology-focused abstract submissions from all facets of the field at our general meeting. The local organizing committee (LOC) employs best practices and EDI principles to promote talks from various equity-seeking groups as well as researchers at all career stages as appropriate.

CSM 2023 is pleased to once again offer a virtual registration option this year, for any participant who is unable to travel to Halifax to join us in person. All in-person registrants have access to our virtual conference events and symposia. A virtual registration will include live/synchronous participation in the Keynote & Awards lectures, Student/ PDF Symposia Events as well as an online poster session.

Not only will we have an exceptional scientific program but we will also make sure that your experience in Halifax is worthwhile! Halifax is a nice place to visit in June, situated on the Atlantic Ocean with lots of history. We have freed up an afternoon on the last day to give you the opportunity to enjoy a stroll on the boardwalk or visit some of Halifax's famous historical sites. This free afternoon will be followed by the President Banquet that will be held at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. We encourage attendees to explore the maritime region of Nova Scotia before or after the conference.

We look forward to hosting CSM 2023 and to welcoming you to Halifax in June. In the meantime, check our website pages often for the latest updates and you can follow us on Twitter at @csm_scm2023 to get the latest news regarding CSM 72nd Annual Conference.

Sincerely,

CSM 2023 Local Organizing Committee
Dr. Nikhil Thomas, CSM2023 Conference Chair
Associate Professor, Dalhousie University
Dept. of Microbiology, Immunology / Medicine

CSM would like to thank the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) without their volunteering, time and support the conference will not be possible.

  • Dr. Nikhil Thomas, Conference Chair

    Dr. Nikhil Thomas, Conference Chair

Dalhousie University, Department of Microbiology & Immunology | Medicine / Division of Infectious Diseases

The Thomas Lab investigates molecular mechanisms of disease in significant human pathogens. Projects employ advanced proteomic and genomic approaches, including innovative next generation DNA sequencing technologies. The overall aim is to discover pathogenic strategies that can be targeted for inhibition by new or existing drugs, thereby limiting human disease. The Thomas Lab is a welcoming and inclusive space for all people to explore scientific investigations.

  • Dr. John Archibald

    Dr. John Archibald

Dalhousie University, Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Department of Microbiology & Immunology

Dr. John Archibald is a Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Arthur B. McDonald Research Chair of Excellence at Dalhousie University. He is also the Director of Dalhousie’s Institute for Comparative Genomics. Dr. Archibald is the author of ~170 research articles and two books: One Plus One Equals One: Symbiosis and the Evolution of Complex Life (Oxford University Press, 2014) and Genomics: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2018).

  • Dr. Robert Beiko

    Dr. Robert Beiko

Dalhousie University, Faculty of Computer Science

Dr. Robert Beiko is a Professor and Head of the Algorithms and Bioinformatics research cluster in the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University. His research aims to understand microbial diversity and evolution using machine learning, phylogenetics, time-series algorithms, and visualization techniques. His group is developing software tools and pipelines to comprehensively survey genes and mobile genetic elements in bacterial genomes, and understand how these genomes have been shaped by vertical inheritance, recombination, and lateral gene transfer. He is also a co-founder of Dartmouth Ocean Techonlogies, Inc., a developer of environmental DNA sampling devices.

  • Dr Erin Bertrand

    Dr Erin Bertrand

    Dalhousie University, Department of Biology

Dr. Erin Bertrand is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Marine Microbial Proteomics at Dalhousie University. Her group employs physiological, biochemical, and bioanalytical approaches to improve our understanding of controls on marine microbial activity and how microbes influence major biogeochemical processes in the ocean. Current foci include identifying key metabolites that structure microbial interactions in the sea, and developing new methods to estimate rates of critical cellular processes in the ocean using metaproteomic measurements.

  • Dr. Morgan Langille

    Dr. Morgan Langille

    Dalhousie University, Department of Pharmacology

Dr. Morgan Langille is an Associate Professor and a Canada Research Chair in Human Microbiomics at Dalhousie University. His research program focuses on understanding the human microbiome and its role in human health using a variety of sequencing and bioinformatic approaches. This research ranges from the creation of novel bioinformatic approaches, analyzing the best practices in microbiome research, and the application of these robust approaches in several human disease and model organism studies. These studies have revealed associations between the microbiome and aging, exercise, Crohn’s disease, and cancer, by profiling diverse body sites including the gut and oral cavities.

  • Dr. John Rohde

    Dr. John Rohde

Dalhousie University, Department of Microbiology & Immunology

The primary focus of Dr. Rohde’s research has been to understand the molecular mechanisms of virulence in the cyto-invasive pathogen Shigella. Rohde has pioneered studies in understanding the bacterial pathogen-host ubiquitin interface. This includes the discovery of novel E3 ubiquitin ligases that are used by Shigella to interfere with innate immune systems of mammalian cells. Dr. Rohde is also interested in microbes associated with forest health.

  • Dr. Robyn Wright

    Dr. Robyn Wright

    Dalhousie University, Department of Pharmacology

Dr. Robyn Wright is a postdoctoral research fellow in Dr. Morgan Langille’s lab at Dalhousie University. Her research in the Langille lab has focused on: 1) studying links between the oral microbiome and diseases such as cancer and IBD as well as mental health in children and adolescents, and 2) benchmarking computational tools used in microbiome research. She is also interested in the remediation of human or ecosystem health threats by microbes and studying how microbial community succession impacts the degradation of recalcitrant pollutants such as plastics.
