Technical Tour 3 - Cogswell District Redevelopment Project Walking Tour / Visite à pied du projet de réaménagement du quartier Cogswell

(Warm Clothing/Walking Shoes) The Cogswell District is the biggest city-building project in the history of Halifax. The current Cogswell Interchange is a piece of road infrastructure in downtown Halifax that was built as part of the Harbour Drive Transportation Plan abruptly cancelled in 1971, leaving the interchange as an orphaned piece of an unfinished expressway. Launched in 2021, the Cogswell District project is a multi-year, multi-phase project designed to connect downtown Halifax with the north end and waterfront, creating a stronger, more inclusive network of communities. Led by the two Project Managers, this tour will take you along the ongoing Cogswell Redevelopment project site. This tour will showcase newly and partially constructed parks and changes in grade as components of the overpass are deconstructed for the final at-grade roads and new street design. You will learn about the important design elements such as climate adaptation, a new district energy system, features of the enhanced on-street transit hub, and upcoming changes to zoning in the area to support the new development blocks capable of supporting new residential and commercial environments for 2,500 people.

Technical Tour 4 - Africville Museum and Walking Tour / Musée et visite à pied d'Africville

(Warm Clothing/Walking Shoes/Phone & Headphones) First settled in the 1860s, Africville was a thriving African Nova Scotian community nestled on the edge of Halifax Harbour. In the 1960s, its buildings were destroyed, and residents displaced to free up land for Halifax’s industrial expansion. Today, the Africville Museum stands in a replica of the church that was the emotional heart of Africville.
