19th Institute of Jurilinguistics : Comparative Law, Legislation and Legislative Drafting
Welcome to the 19th Institute of Jurilinguistics!
We are delighted to welcome you to this new edition of the Institute of Jurilinguistics, where experts and enthusiasts come together to explore the connections between law and language. Join us for a stimulating program of discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities.
Initially, the discipline of comparative law focussed on legislation. Its goal was to improve national laws. However, the circulation of Western legal models has contributed to the erasure of Indigenous legal traditions. Bijuralism has permitted the coexistence of common law and civil law in French and English, which has not always been easy, but the recognition of Indigenous legal traditions presents different challenges. These challenges, namely linguistic ones, require the attention of legislative drafters, translators, and jurilinguists. How can we articulate the points of contact between legal traditions while avoiding the pitfalls of assimilation, appropriation, and hierarchy?
