Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

a) describe the basic anatomy of the lower extremity:

i) femur, patella, tibia, fibula

ii) anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate. ligament, medial collateral ligament, lateral collateral ligament, meniscus, anterior talofibular ligament, calcaneofibular ligament, and posterior talofibular ligament

iii) quadriceps muscle, hamstrings muscles, gastrocnemius muscle, tibialis anterior muscle

b) describe the basic anatomy of the upper extremity:

i) scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, scaphoid

ii) biceps muscle, triceps muscle, rotator cuff muscles

iii) rotator cuff tendons

iv) acromioclavicular joint and ligament

c) define the following common sports injuries and describe their associated symptoms, including:

i) sprains (such as: lateral ankle), strains, fractures (such as: greenstick, scaphoid, and epiphyseal), dislocations (such as: anterior and posterior shoulder), shin splints, tendinous injuries (such as: rotator cuff tendinopathy), ligamentous injuries (such as: anterior cruciate ligament tear and medial collateral ligament sprain)

d) broadly list initial treatment approaches for the aforementioned common sports injuries (such as: RICE and POLICE)

e) describe the roles of different health care providers involved in diagnosing and treating common sports injuries (such as: physicians, physiotherapists, massage therapists)

f) describe the reasons to present to the Emergency Department after sustaining a sports injury

These objectives aim to comprehensively educate participants about sports injuries, including an overview of musculoskeletal anatomy, description of common sports injuries, and approaches to treatment.
