A. Prisma Health, Human Research Protection Program & Institutional Review Board: The Prisma Health Office of Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is responsible for the protection of human subjects engaged in research at Prisma Health sites. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a component of the HRPP and is responsible for the review and approval of research conducted at Prisma Health. The HRPP is registered with the Office of Human Research Protection and is accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection.
B. Prisma Health, Office of Research Services: Prisma Health has administrative offices to support regulatory, grants, and data access related to research. The Offices are committed to the highest professional and ethical standards in the conduct of research and related activities. Speak to members from the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), the Data Support Core (DSC) and the Office of Research Policy and Education (ORP&E).
C. Prisma Health, Midlands Clinical Research Unit: The Midlands Clinical Research Unit is the multispecialty clinical research arm of the Prisma Health Education and Research Institute for the region. Offering support for adult and pediatric clinical research as well as a dedicated cardiology team, the team includes: 11 Research Nurses, 6 Research Coordinators, a manager for each of the 3 teams, a dedicated Investigational Pharmacist, and a Regulatory Coordinator. The Medical Director of the unit is Dr. Helmut Albrecht who is available to assist new and established investigators. The Prisma Health research team is dedicated to collaborating with Prisma Health clinicians and academic partners to advance scientific knowledge and improve healthcare outcomes & quality of life for the residents of South Carolina.
E. Prisma Health, Upstate Clinical Research Units: The Prisma Health Cancer Center Institute, Heart & Vascular Institute, Addiction Medicine Center, Clinical Research Unit- Upstate offer interested investigators across multiple disciplines the opportunity to conduct clinical research. These research teams consist of research nurses, research coordinators, regulatory coordinators, research managers and directors with experience in industry sponsored clinical trials, grant-funded studies and investigator-initiated studies.
F. Research Engagement & Belonging Team: Research professionals committed to fostering meaningful participation, representation, and connection across all communities in clinical research. We champion practices that ensure every voice is valued, every perspective is considered, and every individual feels a sense of belonging in the research enterprise.
G. Prisma Health, Medical Library: For quick questions or complex research, the Prisma Health Medical Library offers expert search services, current awareness updates, instructional opportunities, subject guides, and document delivery. H. The Center for Clinical and Translational Research at USC (ClinTrUSC): The Center for Clinical & Translational Research at the University of South Carolina (ClinTrUSC) was established to address the critical need for advanced clinical and translational research in the Midlands of South Carolina. Supported by a competitive NIH CTR-D award, ClinTrUSC’s mission is to expand research capacity and connect researchers with the infrastructure and partnerships needed to conduct high-quality clinical and translational research. I. USC School of Medicine Greenville: The USC School of Medicine Greenville integrates research early in medical training, emphasizing the mission: “Educate. Innovate. Serve. Where Lifestyle is Medicine”. Our students and faculty work side by side with Prisma Health researchers to make a real impact in medicine, and beyond. Students participate through programs like SOARinG, which pairs them with mentors for summer research projects and symposiums. Major faculty initiatives include the NIH-funded Exercise Is Medicine Greenville project studying physical activity and chronic disease prevention, the Patient Engagement Studio where patients are actively involved in research and intervention development, medical education, and more.
J. AI Ethics in Medicine and Law Symposium: The AI Ethics in Medicine and Law Symposium will be held on Friday, January 9th at the USC Joseph F. Rice School of Law. This event brings together experts, practitioners, and students to examine the evolving impact of artificial intelligence in medicine and law. Through engaging panels and discussions, participants will explore AI’s opportunities and ethical challenges in clinical practice, research, and professional accountability. K. USC Functional Genomics Core: The USC Functional Genomics Core offers state-of-the-art technologies and services supporting genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics and functional genomics research projects.
