Innovation and Societal Impact

The TRICS Innovation and Societal Impact award is a cash prize awarded to the graduate student or faculty poster that best illustrates how their research impacts society. Based on the National Science Foundation’s definition of Broader Impacts, societal impact could be related to:

• Inclusion

• Education

• Public Engagement

• Societal Well-Being

• Workforce Development

• Partnerships

• National Security

• Economic Competitiveness

• Infrastructure for Research/Education

• Other Justified Initiatives

Posters that wish to be considered for this should include a separate, clearly labeled section that indicates in what way this research has societal impact (see above list) and specific examples of how that is currently or will be realized in the future of the research program. Posters will be judged on the quality of these arguments, the degree of impact (people impacted, funds impacted), and their ability to clearly communicate impact to a general audience. Posters will be judged in a mix of internal Tulane and external experts.

Innovation and Technology Development

The TRICS Innovation and Technology Development award is a cash prize awarded to the graduate student or faculty poster that best illustrates how their research could successfully be commercialized through technology development. Posters that wish to be considered for this should include a separate, clearly labeled section that indicates in what way this research could be developed into a commercializable technology. This section should address:

• Market (dollars and/or individuals impacted)

• Technology differentiation and comparison to competitors

• Customer discovery strategy

• Technical development plan

Posters will be judged on these criteria and their ability to clearly communicate impact to a general audience. Posters will be judged in a mix of internal Tulane and external experts.
