Responsible Innovation: The Evolving Role of AI in Simulation-Based Education

With the rapid surge of artificial intelligence (AI) across healthcare and education, simulation-based education stands at a pivotal moment—offering unprecedented opportunities to enhance learning, personalize experiences, and transform how we design, deliver, and evaluate training. This session offers a broad, exploration of how AI is reshaping simulation-based education—across modalities such as manikin based, simulated participant, computer-based training, and extended reality (XR). While the promise of AI is powerful, this session also addresses critical limitations and ethical considerations—especially those related to data bias, hallucinations, and health equity. Drawing from current applications and real-world examples, the session will highlight how simulationists can responsibly integrate AI into workflows while maintaining the integrity of their work. The session will also explore the importance of institutional guidelines for responsible AI use. This session underscores the power of AI however stresses the important message that AI is not a substitute for human judgment. It is critical for simulation professionals to embrace AI’s potential while continuing to appraise its output critically, ensuring that innovation remains responsible, equitable, and accurate.

Dr. Kellie Bryant is the Director of the Center for Innovation in Education Excellence at the National League for Nursing, with over 20 years of teaching experience, including 15 years specializing in simulation. In her current role, Dr. Bryant leads the development of innovative products and services designed to advance nursing education, including faculty development programs and cutting-edge technology solutions. She plays a key role in the creation of new AI software programs aimed at transforming nursing education, leveraging her extensive knowledge to collaborate with strategic partners to expand the NLN's offerings. As a consultant for Advancing Health Equity, Dr. Bryant trains organizations on delivering equitable care and fostering inclusive workplaces.

Her expertise includes leveraging simulation to improve patient safety and creating nursing pathway programs for historically marginalized students. A prolific author and presenter, Dr. Bryant has delivered national and international presentations and secured grants from organizations such as Johnson & Johnson.

A dedicated leader, Dr. Bryant serves on several national and international committees, including as vice chair of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s DEI committee and board member of the Global Simulation in Healthcare Network. She is also an elected board member of the International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation Learning and serves as the Government Relations chair for the Northern Virginia Nurses Association. Recognized for her contributions, she has received numerous accolades, including the Nurse of the Year Award for Community Service from the National Black Nurses Association and the Nurse Educator of the Year Award from the International Council of Nurses.
