Keynote Presentation 1- Denise Klein, PhD

Charles F. Martin Amphitheatre, McIntyre Medical Science Building, MCMED 504, McGill University. Session chair: Eva Kehayia, PhD Denise Klein, PhD, Professor, Neurology and Neurosurgery and Director, Centre for Research on Brain, Language and Music, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, McGill University Title: Examination of the interplay between language experience and the brain How does our experience with language impact human brain organization? In this presentation, I show how three decades of work capitalising on the rich linguistic environment of Montreal has allowed us to gain insights about brain organization for language. The talk will focus on research combining behavioral methods with functional neuroimaging under different language learning scenarios, to investigate how neural organization is influenced by the age of acquisition, proficiency in the language, and the distinctive characteristics of languages. I will also discuss how our work on bilingualism has been used to address the interaction between basic science and the clinic.
