Conference Theme

We are excited to add a theme to the Conference on Higher Education Pedagogy. The conference theme is "Embracing the Future of Learning".

Presentation Types

Practice Sessions

Practice sessions are 45 minutes in length. Practice sessions are focused on sharing, modeling, and discussing higher education teaching and learning, while allowing for interaction with and among session participants. These sessions should go beyond simply "how to" to include "why to". Interactivity with participants is strongly encouraged. Practice proposals should ground the practice in the existing literature, describe how the practice will be exemplified during the session, and explain how the presenter(s) will engage the audience.

Research Sessions

Research session presentations are 20 minutes in length. Research sessions are designed to inform participants of the design, implementation, and results of empirical research focused on teaching and learning in higher education. Please note that two research presentations are scheduled together for each presentation block. A timekeeper will be present in the room to ensure the first presentation does not exceed the allotted time. Research proposals should ground the study in the existing literature, describe the study methodology, provide data analysis and results, and state conclusions.

Roundtable Discussions

Roundtable discussions are 45 minutes in length and are designed to engage with other attendees around a central topic, idea, or research area. Submissions should identify the pedagogical topic of importance and provide specificity about what they plan to discuss in the context of teaching and learning in higher education. The review process will create thematic areas based on the topics identified in the proposal. Since this format is designed to facilitate networking, discussion, and future collaboration, proposals should address what presenters hope to contribute as well as gain from the roundtable. This format could be ideal for a work in progress in the realm of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning that is still in the formative stage, presentation of emergent findings connected to an individual course that is seeking a collaborative opportunity to provide more extensive comparative results, and/or formal presentation of course or programmatic interventions that would benefit from insight from colleagues engaged in similar work.

Poster Sessions

Poster sessions allow for the discussion of scholarly research and/or practice addressing higher education pedagogy with conference participants in an informal scholarly environment. There will be one poster session held on the first day of the conference (Thursday) in conjunction with the conference reception. Poster proposals should follow the requirements set for either research or practice as appropriate.

Available Technology

Computers
Computers are NOT provided. Presenters should bring their own laptops.

Projection and Sound
Each presentation room is equipped with a projector, screen, and audio capability. Your laptop may need an adapter to work correctly with the projector. We have a limited number of adapters available for checkout; however, we recommend you bring your own to ensure you have the correct adapter for your machine.

WiFi
The Inn at Virginia Tech as free guest wifi available for presenters to access.

Assistance with Setup
Conference staff members will be available to assist with technology setup.

Room Setup

Each presentation room will have a presenter station up front. The room will be arranged with rows of chairs to provide as much seating as possible. For Roundtable Discussions, chairs may be arranged in a circle or semicircle. If you have a special setup need or request, please contact the conference chair by emailing teaching@vt.edu.
