The Dyspnea Society's Educational Outreach briefing

This session will highlight current and future educational initiatives of the Dyspnea Society, including efforts to foster collaboration, support early-career researchers, and translate research into practice. It will also outline opportunities to engage with the Society’s growing global network. Speaker: Dr. Andrew Binks, PhD Associate Professor, Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise, Virginia Tech (USA)President, The Dyspnea Society Dr. Andrew Binks is a pulmonary physiologist whose research focuses on the neural mechanisms underlying dyspnea, including sensory processing, respiratory control, and affective responses to breathlessness. He was a lead organizer of the first three Dyspnea Conferences.

Keynote Presentation – Personalizing Mechanical Ventilation to Relieve Dyspnea in the ICU: From Monitoring to Meaningful Care

Dr. Annemijn Jonkman, PhD will deliver a keynote on advancing personalized mechanical ventilation strategies, with a focus on monitoring respiratory drive and effort, improving patient comfort, and addressing dyspnea in the ICU setting Dr. Jonkman is a technical physician at the Adult Intensive Care, Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Her research focuses on the physiological and clinical aspects of mechanical ventilation, with particular emphasis on patient-ventilator interaction, respiratory drive and effort, and comfort during assisted breathing. Her work integrates advanced bedside monitoring tools, including electrical impedance tomography and respiratory muscle pressure measurements, to optimize ventilatory support and reduce patient burden. She co-leads the Rotterdam Advanced Respiratory Care (ROTARC) group, a multidisciplinary research team at Erasmus Medical Center that brings together technical physicians, intensivists, physiologists, and engineers to improve respiratory monitoring, personalize ventilatory support, and implement innovative strategies — including AI-driven tools — to enhance outcomes in critically ill patients.
