Rowena Jacobs, Professor of Health Economics and Deputy Head of Department for CHE, University of York Abstract Around one in eight people worldwide, or approximately 970 million people live with a mental disorder. This number is higher in the Portuguese population where approximately 23% are affected by mental illness. Economics can help address the complex challenges and significant inequalities caused by mental health problems. It can help by quantifying the economic cost of mental illness, pointing to funding challenges and financing and commissioning approaches, highlighting barriers to access and guiding the organisation and delivery of mental health services, identifying social determinants of mental health, and demonstrating cost-effective interventions. This talk will highlight the role that economics can play in understanding the economic challenges for mental health and mental health services and provide examples of how this might help inform policy in the Portuguese context.
