Graduate Student Pre-Conference- Art Farm (Pre-Registration Required)

Registered pre-conference participants should arrive no later than 8:30am AET to sign in. Bus will depart at 9am, returning to the Hedberg by 4pm AET. Art farm is a not-for-profit association established to foster engagement among community, artists, art, and the landscape. This graduate student/early career pre-conference will offer the opportunity to convivially create connections with each other before the conference is officially launched. It will involve meandering through a 2km nature sculpture trail, a 1-hour Q&A session with Head Farmer Chris Read, and interactive/practical sessions that encourage attendees to stretch themselves to consider how to create work in conversation with the land/environment and share unconventional approaches to environmental communication research. The day will conclude with a wine tasting session before returning to nipaluna/Hobart for the official opening of the conference.

VM1-Radical Placemaking of Flood-Affected Areas Through Augmented Reality Artwork (Virtual)

This is a fully virtual session. Zoom Moderator: Emily Montgomerie. This project aims to pilot-test the role of augmented reality (AR) and disaster tales in radical placemaking in disaster response and recovery using participatory action research (PAR) in a flood-affected region in Pakistan. This artwork will retell stories through a spatial-temporal emplacement and enhance flood risk awareness and communication to enhance user engagement. Stories about experiences with disasters help prepare for future disasters. Retelling ‘disaster tales’ through AR could help prepare and visualize invisible impacts, information, and perspectives. The project focuses on retelling flood risk stories based on personal experiences, economic and ecological impacts, and social losses, aiming to foster an engaged pro-environmental behavior change. AR, with increased accessibility and training with affected communities, can engage with radical placemaking and help in recovery efforts during the post-disaster phase.
