Extended Abstract vs. Full Paper
It is important to note that there is no preference between full paper submission or extended abstract submission when it comes to being able to present your work as an oral presentation or poster. However, ICOP wants to offer the publication of full papers to those who want to write a paper. ICOP further wants to guarantee that these are high-quality papers continuing the tradition of past ICOPS; hence we have a full peer review process associated with those papers in place. That's why we need to have them early for sufficient time for the review process. There will be a call for extended abstracts later this year with a deadline of November 30, 2023, for those participants that only want to submit a 2-page abstract and not a full paper.
The program committee strives to maximize the number of different first authors giving oral and poster presentations. However, we also recognize that some conference papers and extended abstracts may need to be presented by a co-author on behalf of the first author who cannot attend ICOP. Therefore, we aim to create a program that allows an author to give a maximum of two oral presentations and present two posters.
No, oral or poster presentation can be given by submitting a full paper (deadline August 31, 2023) or an extended abstract (Deadline: TBD).
You can be the first author twice - but you can only be the first author of one conference paper. You can be the first author of one conference paper and one extended abstract, or you can be the first author of two extended abstracts. You can co-author multiple conference papers and extended abstracts.

Student and Early Career Researcher
A student is defined as an undergraduate student, graduate student or PhD candidate who is currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution.
An Early Career Researcher (ECR) is defined as any student, PhD candidate, or practicing professional who is currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution or has received their highest degree within the past six years. The six-year period can be extended to allow for periods when the ECR was not working in science because of, but not limited to, caring and/or parental responsibilities, disability, personal illness, community obligations or national service.
Travel
It is not possible at this time (May 2023) to determine the international diplomatic conditions that will prevail during ICOP2024. The situation is unpredictable, and the NOC cannot anticipate developments over the next 12 months. Permafrost scientists and engineers in Russia and Belarus are advised to inform themselves about restrictions and carefully consider the international situation as they develop their plans regarding ICOP2024. Significant restrictions may remain in force throughout the next year or longer. The ICOP2024 organizing committee will continue to monitor the situation and re-evaluate it later this year and before the deadline for submitting extended abstracts in November 2023. We will post further statements when they are available.
Yes, travel support will be available for ECRs through the International Permafrost Association, IPA. We are currently working on the details, and as soon as more information is available it will posted on the ECR site.
