Support for Early Career Researchers
Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN) is happy to announce financial support for select Early Career Researcher (ECR)* applicants to attend the International Conference on Permafrost (ICOP) in Whitehorse, Canada June 16-20. Please read the following carefully for information about how to be considered for funding:
- PYRN will offer financial support to offset the cost of conference registration. Applicants must be a member of PYRN, ECR and first author for an ICOP extended abstract or paper submission. You can register for a PYRN membership for no cost at this link. PYRN will also advertise travel and lodging support from other organizations on this website. Please check in frequently as new information will be added regularely.
- If you have submitted a paper or abstract as first author and would like to be considered for funding, fill out this application by December 8th, 2023. ** IMPORTANT**: Please refrain from registering for the conference until award notifications have been made, because registration fees will be covered with a coupon code that can be applied during registration. The conference organizers will make sure that enough registration spaces will be available when those who receive financial support are announced (mid December 2023).
- Please note the Extended Abstract deadline of November 30th is the last abstract deadline for ICOP. Funding recipients will be required to submit a FrostByte video presentation prior to the conference (see below for details).
If you have any questions, feel free to email jmyoung1@ualberta.ca
Thank you,
Joseph Young (chair, PYRN ICOP committee) and Emma Lathrop (PYRN President)
*An Early Career Researcher (ECR) is defined as any student, PhD candidate, or practicing professional who is currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution or has received their highest degree within the past six years. The six-year period can be extended to allow for periods when the ECR was not working in science because of, but not limited to, caring and/or parental responsibilities, disability, personal illness, community obligations or national service.
PYRN-IPA Workshop
PYRN, with support from the International Permafrost Association, will be hosting an all-day workshop to include guest speakers, seminars, breakout sessions, and networking events relevant to permafrost science and engineering, academic and industry career paths, and soft skill development. PYRN will also be hosting a dinner party for ECR attendees in downtown Whitehorse. To register for these events, please fill out this form. Stay tuned for announcements of the workshop speakers and the detailed program by subscribing to the PYRN newsletter and social media.

For students (BSc, MSc, and PhD levels) doing internships in the 2024 spring semester
The UArctic PermaIntern network project (permaintern.org) will offer travel stipends to students in any country who are planning to do internships with a permafrost focus during the spring of 2024. To qualify for the stipend, the student will contribute to the PermaIntern program by participating as a pilot intern and evaluate and help improve the service. The student must also submit an abstract to session 2C (Note: deadline November 30th!), describing the (planned) project, preferably with the internship host and supervisor as co-authors. Contact Ylva Sjöberg (ys@ign.ku.dk) for more information about the offer and how to apply.
