    Community Tours

Tour 1: Collaborative Social and Environmental Projects: Interweaving International and Local Join us in an immersion trip with three site visits, starting near the US-Mexico border, passing through Logan Heights, and ending in the Linda Vista community, where the University of San Diego is located. At each site, we will meet with community partners to explore how the local, regional, and international are tightly interwoven in different ways around issues including water contamination, grassroots mobilization and public art, and sustainable food systems, among others. We will begin by meeting with elected officials and community representatives from both sides of the international border at the Tijuana River Estuary. We will then have a brief visit to Chicano Park to learn about the history and struggle behind the creation of this cultural landmark as well as current challenges faced. The trip will conclude with an introduction to a network of community gardens and the long-term efforts of dedicated gardeners and teachers in our local neighborhood. Tour 2: Experience UC Mat-koo-la-hoo-ee: (Re)casting UC San Diego from the Kumeyaay perspective Join Dr. Theresa Ambo, Co-PI of the Indigenous Futures Institute (IFI) at UC Mat-koo-la-hoo-ee, aka UC San Diego, to learn about her projects and IFI's work channeling Indigenous knowledge through a community-based participatory model to create community-driven solutions to current issues, imagining futures grounded in collaboration, decolonization, and Indigenous resurgence.

Preconference B: Bridging Campus and Community: Fostering Reciprocal Partnerships for Meaningful Engagement

bus leaves with Tour 2 for UCSD at 8am Colleagues from the University of California, San Diego and LEAD California invite you to connect with our community partners to learn their insights on what makes for successful community-engaged collaborations. Partners from non-profit, government, and school system sectors will participate in a panel discussion to address the successes and challenges of working with campus faculty, staff, and students. Participants will also learn about LEAD California’s powerful network of colleges and universities advancing reciprocity in community engagement for an equitable and just democracy. After the panel discussion there will be interactive roundtable discussions with these community partners for deep dives into topics identified by the session participants. With this intimate setting participants can engage directly with community leaders and problem solve community engagement challenges. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how to build and sustain mutually beneficial relationships that not only enhance the educational experience but also drive positive change within the community. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or new to communityengagement, this session will offer practical tools, inspiring stories, and a collaborative environment to foster new connections and ideas.

Preconference A: Place-Based Justice: An Anti-Racist Framework for University-Community Engagement

In 2018, Erica K. Yamamura and Kent Koth published Place-Based Community Engagement in HigherEducation describing place-based community engagement as “a long-term, university-widecommitment to partner with local residents, organizations, and other leaders to focus equally oncampus and community impact within a clearly defined geographic area”. Since then, colleges anduniversities around the world have made an increasing number of commitments to place, leveragingboth financial and human capital to advance SDGs in their own communities. However, as thesociocultural and legal landscapes of higher education shift, the success—in terms of communityimpact—of place-based initiatives has varied. In this workshop, presenters will support participants innavigating and responding to this changing landscape. By leveraging place-based communityengagement as a theory, tool, and practice, the presenters will guide participants through a SWOTanalysis of this work on their respective campuses and co-create a path forward, drawing on Yamamuraand Koth’s three phases of place-based community engagement: exploration, development, andsustaining (i.e. a place-based community engagement action plan). Community engagementprofessionals across a diversity of institutions are encouraged to participate. Community partnerorganization representatives are welcome, too. Because of the unique anti-racist commitment andpractice of the Network, BIPOC faculty and staff will likely find this workshop to be a place of affinity, affirmation, and solace. We also encourage those who hold positional leadership roles—whether onindividual campuses or in our field more broadly—to attend, as much of this work requires a robustgrasstops strategy for long-term, sustained success.
